Position Summary
This position provides support and expertise on Entergy’s Telecommunications Transport Systems and Services. The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure the availability of applicable systems and services, and to support the planning, design, development, testing and implementation of new infrastructure, systems, and services.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and assist Telecommunications initiatives.
- Provide Operational Support, ensuring production systems and devices are online and available.
- Resolve complex technical problems through experience and coordination of efforts with Entergy personnel, customers, and vendors.
- Recommend, plan, and execute implementation of new infrastructure and services, as well as modifications to existing infrastructure and services to improve operation or resolve problems.
- Management of multiple Fiber Optic Systems, including: DWDM, CWDM, SONET, GigE, Ethernet over SONET services
- Responsible for developing Telecommunications Transport System processes to ensure best practices for configuration control, backup and recovery.
- Manage projects in terms of equipment, hardware/software, personnel, contractor and schedules.
- Interface with 3rd party providers of core bandwidth during operational events or to facilitate planned maintenance, including entering necessary change management documentation.
- Coordination of all local hardware provisioning and installation on the Telecommunications Transport Systems.
Minimum education required of the position
Bachelor’s Degree in a technical discipline preferred or equivalent experience
Minimum experience required of the position
IT Specialist Sr: 4+ years of relevant technical experience
IT Consultant: 6+ years of relevant technical experience
Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required of the position
- Demonstrate knowledge/experience in telecommunications theory and systems including hardware and software protocols.
- Strong understanding of multiplexing cross connect systems technology and practices.
- Understanding of fiber optic transmission implementations in a utility environment.
- In depth understanding of SONET principles including ring design and architectures, provisioning, and network management tools.
- Experience with at least one major supplier of SONET, DWDM, or IP routing equipment is required. This experience should include systems specification and knowledge of turn-up and test procedures.
- Ability to work and communicate well (verbal and written) with customer and project team members.
- Possess a strong customer service orientation and ability to support multiple task assignments.
- Ability to interface well with field technicians as demonstrated by previous experience.
- Ability to critically analyze an issue with other team members and determine the most reasonable and least impactful decision.
Technical Skills preferred, but not required
- Background in Network Topology to include MOTOROLA, SONET, DWDM, and IP routing equipment.
- Understanding of Fiber Optic Systems, including: DWDM, CWDM, SONET, GigE, Ethernet over SONET services
- Understanding of packet switched networking, including: Ethernet, IP MPLS-TP, L2 VLAN
- Experience with Ciena family platform, JDSU, BTI, Nortel 3500, AVIAT Microwave Radios, DPS T/Mon, Motorola 800Mhz Two-way Radio System
- Experience with Network management services (SNMP , NTP, AAA)
- Experience with Microsoft SharePoint
- Experience with Service Now (SNOW) ticketing system
- Working knowledge of network architecture and design, including integrations with and support of legacy signals and protocols
- Network certifications a plus (e.g. CCNA, JNCIA, CTNS)
- Network Management System experience (e.g. SolarWinds, Broadcom, Nagios, etc)
