Job Purpose 
The Category Specialist I is an entry level position that is responsible for supporting the implementation of Supplier Commercial Excellence for an assigned category(ies). The role supports the placement of Entergy’s ~$4B third party spend into the appropriate supply markets. The specialist works under close supervision to ensure work inputs and outputs are completed on schedule, consider all elements of the
category management process, and provide value to the business, including an understanding of contractual and business risks. The position is responsible for the utilization of the standard Category
Management process of Plan-Strategy-Source-Perform across an assigned category(ies) and may operate across multiple business units to leverage end-to-end value for an assigned portfolio of spend. The primary
objective of the role is to create value through the supply chain in terms of safety, diversity, cost, risk mitigation and enhanced supplier performance.


Key interfaces for this position are internal business customers and external suppliers for each assigned request. Within the Entergy SC organization, common interfaces for this role are Procurement Operations,
Category Management, Capital Projects & Decommissioning and Warehousing and Inventory Management, Safety, and Supplier Diversity.


Core Responsibilities

Safety/Human Performance:

  • Actively promote strong safety behaviors and ensure the team always puts safety first;
  • Utilize key tools, programs, and proactive field visits to assure standards and behaviors;
  • Monitor and influence suppliers to proactively identify any safety concerns.

Incident Response

  • Perform storm (SAMS).

Category Strategy:

  • Develop and execute category and subcategory strategies, checklist, manage spend and regularly track market trends, Ability to work strategically and tactically to deliver positive business results.

Category Processes:

  • Systematic process to review commercial, process, technical, risk management and sustainability strategies for product categories and subcategories.

Supplier Management:

  • Follows supplier management strategy in place, linked with supplier segment and category strategies, VMOS with business reviews.

Supplier Base:

  • Supplier portfolio is regularly reviewed based on price/performance and cost structure comparison.


  • Recurrent effort to bundle purchasing and to forecast demand across departments/business units.

Customer Engagement:

  • Ability influence and work across Cross-functional teams and levels in the organization to optimize supply-chain, redesign-to cost and make-or-buy strategies.




Education, Experience and/or Certification
• Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, Accounting, Engineering, Legal, or other related
discipline OR minimum 4 years of combined supplier contracting, vendor management, other
related supply chain or business experience.


Technical (Awareness of) 
o Entergy’s business model and key interfaces in the business and SC;
o The principles and practices of category management processes;
o Supplier relationship/vendor management principles, practices and tools;
o The application of sourcing strategies that are agreed to and supported by stakeholders;
o Methods for RFx price breakdowns and deconstructing vendor pricing models;
o Obtaining market intelligence and applying to category and sourcing strategies;
o Purpose and application of “cost to serve” for customers;
o Methods to develop supplier bases;
o Negotiation of simple contracts, under supervision;
o Pre-award/post-award contract management tools and processes;
o Business and SC operations within Entergy; including how Entergy buys and pays (HEBAP);
o Demand planning processes and applications.

o Ability to manage multiple tasks and/or projects; deliver on schedule;
o Basic application of analytical skills and tools to make fact-based decisions; aware of data sources;
o Capable of clear and concise communications, written and oral, with all stakeholders;
o Ability to resolve conflicts without damaging relationships;
o Ability to build relationships and networks with internal and external stakeholders.
