JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE: 

 

The consultant will represent the Infrastructure Applications group within IT's Workplace and Infrastructure Services department.  The Infrastructure Applications team provides multiple services to the enterprise, including database technologies, application/infrastructure monitoring, and batch processing, among others. 

 

While this position will be filled with a focus on database technologies, the consultant role will be expected to maintain familiarity and proficiency with other technologies and processes supported by the team in order to provide backup to other team members as needed. 

 

The consultant's primary responsibility is to provide oversight of contract resources who provide day-to-day, hands-on support for our systems.  Working closely with other teams in a multi-vendor, multi-shore environment, the consultant must help to foster cooperation between teams to solve complex problems and continuously improve customer experience.

 

The consultant will support an enterprise-wide fleet of SQL Server and Oracle databases and the processes which support those environments.  In this role, the consultant will serve as a subject matter expert for each of those platforms.  The consultant will be expected to maintain in-depth technical knowledge of system operations and configurations, including specialized engineered systems like Oracle Exadata and Recovery Appliances (ZDLRAs).

 

Other areas supported by the Infrastructure Applications group include:

  • Enterprise monitoring solutions (Broadcom DX NetOps, UIM, Spectrum, DX APM, Dynatrace APM, and others)
  • Batch processing solutions (CA Workload Automation)

 

 

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure outsourced partners are taking appropriate actions to both meet their SLAs and ensure a high-quality customer experience.
  • Communicate strategies, statuses, and business impacts to IT and business leadership in a clear and meaningful way.
  • Ensure quality root cause investigations and effective remediation efforts for all problems identified in aligned technologies.
  • Ensure database systems are well monitored through standardized platforms (OEM, Broadcom UIM/Spectrum, etc.).
  • Manage the delivery of Infrastructure Applications projects to ensure delivery on time and on budget, with first-time quality, and adherence to business requirements while standardizing and rationalizing technical platforms.
    • Ensure compliance with all project deployment methodologies, internal standards, and operational guidelines to enable the operations team to support and maintain all solutions per stated service level agreements.
    • Provide a point of escalation for Project Managers (day-to-day management of vendor execution of projects) on technology-related issues. Coordinate with other technical leads requiring interactions with relevant technologies (e.g., server configuration, applications). Escalate issues to Program Managers as necessary.
    • Participate in design reviews with development teams to ensure compliance with the defined standards.
  • Develop a technology strategy and roadmap for the Infrastructure Applications, in coordination with the Enterprise Architecture (EA) team, to build new and enhanced business capabilities. Responsible for consolidating and standardizing technologies over time to align with a preferred solution, as defined by the EA strategy. Work with Solution Architects to identify changing business needs for aligned technology and develop plans to meet those needs.
  • Track emerging trends in technology and business needs in coordination with EA. Plan and oversee upgrades of technology. Develop strategy for rationalizing platforms to decrease overall technology costs and increase technology standardization, including development of new capabilities, consolidation of platforms, and retirement of functionality.
  • Provide level 3 support, through Infrastructure Application vendors, for major incidents and other issues escalated by the operations team.  This will include after-hours support for high priority issues.
  • Maintain relationships with technology vendors including but not limited to Microsoft, Oracle, and Broadcom.
  • Maintain a positive and constructive relationship with Entergy’s outsourcing partners, leveraging their expertise to pilot, design, test, implement, and operate all database service offerings.  Maintain strong positive relationships with vendor partner leadership and escalate concerns as necessary.
  • Ensure Entergy's configuration management database (CMDB) is kept accurate and up to date for all aligned technologies on an on-going basis.  Ensure supporting processes (automated discovery, service introduction, etc.) are functioning as intended.
  • Maintain awareness of and ensure on-going compliance with licensing for aligned technologies.  Consultant will play a role in contract and invoice management for aligned technologies.
  • Maintain oversight of compliance efforts related to aligned technologies, including annual SOX testing, export compliance, etc.
  • Ensure clear lines of responsibility exist in a multi-vendor environment, with no gaps in coverage.
  • Maintain continuous awareness of any vulnerabilities identified in aligned technologies, and ensure appropriate action is taken to eliminate said vulnerabilities in a timely manner.
  • Ensure operational process documentation is kept up to date.
  • Provide hands-on support of systems only on an as-needed basis.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum education and experience required of the position

IT Consultant: Bachelor's Degree in a technical or business-related field and minimum 6+ years of professional experience is required OR in lieu of degree minimum 10+ years of professional experience is required.

 

IT Specialist Sr: Bachelor's Degree in a technical or business-related field and minimum 4+ years of professional experience is required OR in lieu of degree minimum 8+ years of professional experience is required.

 

 

  • SQL Server and/or Oracle Database Administrator experience is a plus

 

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required of the position 

 

  • Extremely strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately prioritize and manage workload in a remote environment
  • Demonstrated experience managing IT projects in an outsourced development environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse and remote development teams
  • Experience in project delivery in highly outsourced environments
  • Familiarity or experience in working with ITIL methodologies
  • Ability to communicate and build relationships
  • Able to participate in an on-call rotation
  • The following skills and technologies are considered a strong plus:
    • ServiceNow
    • Hadoop and SAP HANA database operations
    • Process automation
    • Continuous Improvement methodologies
