Job Description: 

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Enterprise Capacity Management Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in back-end storage infrastructures, virtualization technologies, and capacity management toolsets. This role involves developing optimized capacity hosting plans, analyzing server and storage performance, and providing recommendations to maintain an optimized IT infrastructure.  This role will also provide thought leadership as we begin to move significant portions of our enterprise to AWS.  With the journey to the cloud, our capacity management strategies will have to evolve while continuing to serve our on-prem needs. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

 

On-Prem Capacity Management: 

    • Leverage tools to predict future compute and storage capacity needs for the enterprise. 
    • Provide capacity reports and recommendations to maintain an optimized footprint and costs as IT infrastructure needs evolve over time. 
    • Manage capacity management software, currently BMC Truesight Capacity Optimization. 
    • Remediate software vulnerabilities through software upgrades and patches, including supporting software such as Apache Tomcat, PostgreSQL, Java, and Oracle client maintenance. 
    • Participate in major incident management calls to provide real-time performance metrics. 
    • Create and maintain time-forecasting models for servers and storage. 
    • Provide analysis and recommendations for server and storage consolidation efforts with predictive modeling for tactical (18-24 month) forecasts. 
    • Develop hosting plans and capacity architecture for new application projects, application upgrades, and application enhancements. 
    • Assist projects in determining capacity requirements for compute and storage. 
    • Perform capacity analysis to determine hardware purchasing needs. 
    • Review and maintain enterprise Disaster Recovery Testing Strategy. 
    • Periodically review RPO measurements and develop remediation plans where infrastructure RPO gaps are identified. 

 

Cloud Capacity Management: 

    • Provide key data and thought leadership for FinOps processes. 
    • Develop and implement cloud capacity management strategies to ensure optimal utilization of cloud resources. 
    • Monitor and analyze cloud resource usage to identify trends, forecast future needs, and make recommendations for scaling. 
    • Collaborate with cloud service providers to optimize resource allocation and manage costs effectively. 
    • Implement automation tools and scripts to streamline cloud capacity management processes. 
    • Assist in managing cloud cost allocation and chargeback processes to ensure accurate cost distribution across departments and projects. 
    • Identify and implement cost-saving measures, such as rightsizing, reserved instances, and spot instances. 

 

Education, Experience, and/or Certification: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.  Advanced degree a plus.  Significant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. 
  • 8+ years of experience managing infrastructure and capacity in an enterprise environment. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. 
  • Solid knowledge of enterprise architecture/design principles (e.g., application, server, and network design as well as SDLC principles and best practices). 
  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately prioritize and manage workloads in a remote environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively. 
  • AWS, Microsoft, Oracle, or other relevant certifications are considered a plus. 
  • Experience managing and/or designing technology solutions in a cloud environment is a strong plus (particularly AWS). 

 

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • Experience with back-end storage infrastructures (SAN/NAS/DAS), such as NetApp, Comm Vault  Hyperscale-X, Cisco MDS (SAN), and HP 3PAR (not required but a plus). 
  • Experience with virtualization technologies, including Nutanix (Prism Central, Prism Element) and VMware (vCenter, ESXi). Docker and Kubernetes containerization experience is a plus. 
  • Experience working with one or more capacity management toolsets for servers and storage. 
  • Experience developing optimized capacity hosting plans for new business applications or application enhancements/upgrades. 
  • Ability to translate project requirements into labor and physical asset estimates based on current vs. future state capacity requirements. 

 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Experience analyzing server and storage performance to identify infrastructure bottlenecks and root cause analysis. 
  • Working knowledge of capacity management predictive modeling, including algorithmic-based error measurement, outlier detection, X-bar/S, and similar analyses. 
  • Working knowledge of management data integration with managed systems, including SQL, Oracle, JSON, and SNMP. 
  • Working knowledge of SAN configurations and planning (Cisco MDS / NetApp). 
  • Working knowledge of Cisco UCS environments. 
  • Working knowledge of networking as it relates to server setup, including subnetting, load balancing, port-mapping, bonding/LACP, and routing authorities. 
  • Working knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS) – associate architect certification is a plus. 
  • Preferred candidate will have experience with several of the following tools: 
      • BMC Truesight Capacity Optimization (TSCO) 
      • BMC Helix 
      • NetApp Data Infrastructure Insights (DII) 
      • Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) 
      • VMware vCenter 
      • Nutanix Prism Central and Prism Element 
      • Cisco Intersight
