Job Summary/Purpose

The manager, product owner is responsible for the development, management, and improvement of the utility's products and services designed to grow the Utility business, improve customer satisfaction and increase operational efficiencies. The manager, product owner is responsible for aligning the utility's offerings with customer needs, developing business cases, support OpCos with managing pricing and tariff structures, overseeing the product lifecycle, coordinating with stakeholders to establish and continually assess a strategic lighting roadmap, and driving innovation within the regulatory framework. They will lead a team to execute on these responsibilities. The manager, product owner plays a crucial role in balancing the interests of customers, the utility's business objectives, and the regulatory requirements to deliver effective and compliant products and services.

 

Job Duties/Responsibilities

Customer-Centric Product Development:

  • Gather and analyze customer feedback, market trends, and industry insights to develop and enhance products and services that meet the needs and preferences of the utility's customers
  • Assess and establish customer POV on lighting and unify internal stakeholders around a common product roadmap
  • Develop a comprehensive business case that outlines the market opportunity, customer demand, and potential financial and operational benefits of the new offering
  • Facilitate the product value creation to meet milestones, deliver on expectations of key stakeholders, and support the delivery of the product in alignment with defined timelines
  • Responsible for creating, prioritizing and executing on product backlog
  • Responsible for preparing material necessary to present product strategy, business case and justification for proposed solutions to leadership for review
  • Define go-to-market strategy, manage minimum viable product use, iterations, and timelines
  • Coordinate with Regulatory Affairs and Regulatory Services to develop and manage the pricing and tariff structures for the utility's products and services, ensuring they are aligned with regulatory requirements and the utility's overall business strategy
  • Ensure that all products and services developed and offered by the utility comply with the relevant regulations, laws, and industry standards set by regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate with various departments (e.g., marketing, sales, customer service, customer care, meter to cash, IT, operating companies, regulatory and legal) to ensure a smooth product launch
  • Monitor product performance and customer feedback during the initial deployment phase

 

Product Maintenance and Support:

  • Continuously monitor product performance and address any issues or customer concerns through the product development and evolution or lighting sales and operations teams
  • Oversee the identification, development, tracking and reporting of customer and operational metrics
  • Implement necessary updates, upgrades, or modifications to improve customer satisfaction and product operations
  • Provide support to Business Readiness and Change Management to ensure effective training for product deployment/execution teams
  • Track and analyze the performance of the product and providing regular reports to leadership and stakeholders; partner with Supply Chain as needed to address product quality concerns with the manufacturer
  • Continuously evaluate the product’s lifecycle and identifying the optimal time for retirement or replacement

 

Product Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage the product's operating budget; forecast revenue and profitability for the product, considering factors such as pricing, customer demand, and market trends
  • Generate regular financial reports, such as revenue, O&M and capital, to track the product's financial performance and collaborate with the finance team to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, patterns, and potential issues, and using this information to inform decision-making
  • Evaluate the financial viability of potential product enhancements, upgrades, or new features
  • Prioritize and allocate resources, such as budget and personnel, to support the product's strategic objectives and financial goals
  • Advocate for the necessary financial resources to ensure the product's continued success and growth
  • Identify and assess financial risks associated with the product, such as changes in market conditions, regulatory requirements, or customer behavior and implement strategies for risk mitigation

 

Stakeholder Management:

  • Meet with customers, contractors, vendors and other stakeholders as part of the product planning and development stages Identify and engage all relevant stakeholders, both internal and external, who have an interest or influence in the product
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive stakeholder engagement plan to effectively communicate with and involve stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle, facilitating discussions and negotiations to align their interests and resolve any conflicts
  • Continuously monitor and manage the relationships with stakeholders, addressing their concerns, maintaining their support and buy-in, and providing regular updates and reports on the product's performance, compliance, and any issues or changes
  • Incorporate stakeholder feedback into the product's continuous improvement efforts to ensure the product remains compliant, meets customer needs, and supports the overall business strategy within the regulated environment

 

Agile Methodology:

  • Utilize agile methodology to iterate quickly and incorporating feedback on deliverables and outputs, where applicable.
  • Participate in agile project management activities, such as sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives, to ensure the timely delivery of solutions, where applicable

 

Cross Functional Collaboration:

  • Partner with various departments to align on customer experience goals and initiatives.
  • Communicate insights and recommendations to executive leadership to inform strategic decision-making.

 

Minimum Requirements

Minimum education required of the position

  • Bachelor's Degree in technical or business-related field or equivalent work experience

 

Minimum experience required of the position

  • Proven (typically ~5+ years) progressive experience with real business impact (related experience)

 

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required of the position

Technical Skills:

  • Project management experience with ability to manage time and schedules to meet aggressive deadlines
  • Experience in business case development
  • Business domain expertise and/or IT expertise
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively both to internal and external stakeholders
