Job Summary/Purpose
Our company is presented with a once in a generation opportunity to grow and transform the power infrastructure and other industries in our region as the world decarbonized. Developing economical low carbon power supply solution is key to this success. The power sector is faced with a myriad of new power solutions (for example carbon capture and sequestration, small modular nuclear reactors, accessing off-system resources via high-voltage transmission line), new market dynamics and commercial challenges. This group is to help the company and broader Power Development team to effectively determine and develop the most desirable solution to meet our customers’ needs. The group’s imperative is to strategically explore low/no carbon solutions to enable design, develop and safely execute owned and competitive low/no carbon solutions which in turns enable growth and achieve our stakeholder’s sustainability objectives while maintaining affordability and reliability.
Our team, Power Development Strategic Exploration, is responsible for developing business cases, costing points-of-views and economics assessments for existing or new power supply solutions. This position will be responsible to developing costing points-of-views and economics assessments for one of three areas: (1) natural gas and carbon capture, (2) renewables and battery and (3) new solutions like small modular nuclear reactors. This is a highly technical role at this level and is expected to mentor others and effectively lead technical efforts.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Power Solutions Economics and Optimization – Develop economics assessments of potential power development solutions and provide optimized design structure around economics and sensitivities.
- Decision Support Analysis – Develop and provide full assessments, rapid responses, or easy to use models / rules of thumb to support development of power solutions.
- Market Analytics – Monitor and forecast market conditions in relevant power markets; Monitor market mechanics (e.g., MISO practices and protocols); Assess implications of current and projected market conditions on power development options. Summarized key findings, determine potential actions, and effectively present and defend conclusions and recommendations
- Technology Assessment – Monitor and forecast cost and technical capabilities of generation technologies including emerging technologies; Develop point of view information regarding generation technology alternatives.
- Assess key drivers, business needs, available tools and data and resources to do the work to determine the best solution framework optimizing over accuracy, timeliness and resource needs. Direct and coach internal analyst performing the work, contract external expert or do the work as needed.
- Develop internal and external relationships to promote the team’s effectiveness.
- Leads and develop a technical team to achieve the team’s objectives. Set team’s vision, work standards and development plans.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum education required of the position
- BS / BA in technical field such as Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Economics or equivalent work experience.
- Preferred: MBA or other advanced degree (Economics, Finance, etc.)
Minimum experience required of the position
- At least 8 years of relevant professional experience
- Preferred: prior experience effectively performing in lead roles
Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position
- Must have demonstrated leadership skills to mentor and lead others effectively and proactively take leadership assignments and perform successfully in those lead roles.
- Extensive industry knowledge and very high-level analytical skills.
- Requires deep technical knowledge of technical aspects of resource planning, including thorough understanding of analytical methods, expert analytical tool kit including highly functioning spreadsheet skills.
- Requires expert knowledge of relevant planning and decision support models; research methods; relevant power markets; relevant market mechanics and protocols; commercial practices pertaining to power transactions; applicable aspects of utility regulation.
