JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:
The Operations Specialist is part of a team that centrally monitors Entergy’s regulated Power Generation resources’ fleet-wide performance, maintenance, and operations. The objective of the position is to provide technical expertise that drives improved operations in the MISO market, efficient maintenance practices that lower production costs, continuous improvement, and unit availability. The position will support the gathering, tracking of analytics and utilization of Advance Pattern Recognition (APR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. The position will work in a state-of-the-art 24x7 remote-operations control center (ROCC) in the Woodlands, Texas. The ROCC will include remote resource operators and Energy Management Operations (EMO) personnel.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work an assigned shift in the ROCC as part of an overall fleet coverage to monitor resource operation and performance. The weekday coverage consists of overlapping 9-hour morning/evening shifts and a single 12-hour per day weekend rotation.
- Review and assess resource equipment condition using APR software
- Create, tune, and implement APR models utilizing APR software
- Monitor equipment performance and operational trends to predict component health and deviation from operational standards
- Triage developing issues to appropriate plant/engineering contacts and advise course of action, alerting SME's and resource personnel of anomalies which could adversely affect the reliability, availability, maintainability, and performance of equipment.
- Track problems and issues to resolution, including participation in root cause analysis process
- Provide guidance and support to Entergy’s EMO Generation Dispatcher, Power Marketer, Asset Managers, and resource operators
- Routinely review the Tier 1 and Tier 2 instrument lists and support resolution of issues related to those lists
- Prepare and provide routine reports on resource performance and equipment condition to management
- Assist in the identification, evaluation and implementation of new processes or technology in support of Power Generation’s key initiatives, such as fuel efficiency, enhanced monitoring, and remote unit operation
- Work with reliability analysts/engineers to capture and quantify avoided costs
- Supports resource compliance and operations with all commercial, contractual, regulatory, safety, and operational obligations
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum education required of the position:
- High school diploma or GED. Desired: Training in power plant operations, power plant systems and power plant performance or corresponding technical training from an accredited school
Minimum experience required of the position:
- The candidate should have at least 2 years of operational experience in drum type, supercritical, or combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants. Should be recognized system wide as knowledgeable in power plant operations. Additional experience in other resource technologies is a benefit (e.g., solar, wind, utility size batteries, reciprocating engines, Hydro). Candidates title and level will be determine based on years of relative industry and technical experience.
Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position:
- Strong working knowledge of rotating components such as pumps, motors, steam turbines, generators, and field instrumentation
- Ability to recognize off normal conditions and trends in critical equipment parameters
- Strong working knowledge of operations of natural gas combined cycle and peaker plant technologies, coal fired power plants, solar plants, and associated systems with the ability to recognize off normal conditions and trends in unit operations during startup, shut down, and on-line operations.
- Good understanding of power plant performance (thermal, physical, operational, and environmental)
- Familiar with (APR) software. SmartSignal knowledge preferred.
- Understand condition-based maintenance programs and technology applications
- Familiar with basic functions of MISO and Entergy's operation within the market
- Possess interpersonal and communication skills necessary to develop relationships with other Plant Support and Operations personnel that promotes an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect
- Analytical skills that provide decision making support to resources regarding suggested improvements in equipment and unit operations, as well as identification of instrumentation issues
- Strong computer skills, including how to effectively use the corporate computer tools provided as a standard tool set, PI-DataLink, AF and PiVision, and standard computer codes for analysis and problem solving
- Ability to adapt to a changing work environment and flexibility to changing priorities.
