Job Summary/Purpose

The primary responsibilities of this position is to diligence, negotiate, implement and then manage power purchase agreements, acquisitions, co-owner arrangements and other capacity and energy related products. The position is responsible for ensuring contracts are appropriately developed and managed to ensure the full recovery and realization of benefits to all Entergy Stakeholders. The position provides commercial leadership in coordination with senior management, compliance, regulatory staff, various subject matter experts, and other stakeholders.  In addition, the position manages cross-functional subject matter experts in the support of diligence and interactions with MISO. The position also maintains market contacts and relationships internally and externally to ensure current energy product and market knowledge and effectively implement corresponding strategic supply initiatives. 

 

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic commercial guidance to senior management with respect to the market for capacity and energy products including conventional generation and renewable products.
  • Serve as lead negotiator with counterparties for power agreements of one year or longer.  The power agreements can include the following: power plant acquisitions, physical and financial power purchase agreements including storage, technical scope documents, unsolicited offers, amendments, renewals, and other energy agreements.  As lead negotiator, serve as the diligence team manager, negotiation strategy developer, process and contract execution administrator
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the counterparties and internal Entergy business units.  In the liaison role, lead and work with internal teams to manage accounting issues, price structures, contract terms, delivery constraints, regulatory requirements and any and all other risks. 
  • Lead and support the necessary analysis and risk assessment to develop solution-based options for complex contractual obligations which often requires cross-functional input.  Develop, recommend and implement strategy and process improvements that support the company vision and resource procurement strategy.
  • Support all internal approval requirements, including extensive document and presentation development activities for executive management including the Entergy Board of Directors.
  • Provide support for Entergy's regulatory and legal proceedings, including the drafting and providing input for formal requests for information and testimony.
  • Serve as the Entergy management representative in strategic co-owned units. Develop and maintain internal and external customer relationships in support of this function which includes management meetings, budget controls, operational performance reviews, and other contractual obligations which vary by contract.
  • Support large-scale conventional generation and renewable capacity and energy solicitations.  Manage the development of detailed diligence questionnaires, term sheets and/or model contracts to serve as the basis of proposed projects.  Lead comprehensive team of subject matter experts to develop evaluation criteria and manage the viability assessment of proposed projects.
  • Actively manage ongoing contract obligations to ensure compliance with contractual terms and conditions, including the development and adherence to milestones, testing requirements compliance, capacity payment confirmations, NERC standards, notice requirements among other contractual and statutory obligations. Monitor MISO operations of existing long-term power agreements in order to mitigate commercial risk and assure full recovery and benefits to Entergy stakeholders.   Participate in relevant industry meetings, as needed, to provide strategic feedback concerning commercial issues and maintain market knowledge.
  • Responsibilities and complexity of contractual assignments commensurate with position held.

 

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • At least 6 years of relevant utility work experience and bachelor’s degree (at least 8 years of experience for Sr Advisor); or in lieu of degree, 10+ years of related energy work experience
  • Desired experience:
    • experience managing power contracts in a regulated utility environment
    • experience participating in regulatory proceedings or filings
    • experience managing large projects implementation
    • experience with commercial transaction negotiations; experience in stakeholder management/leading cross functional project teams and high-level communications.
    • Advanced Degree

 

Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position

  • Knowledge of ISO/RTOs, with a preference for MISO
  • Working knowledge of key contractual risk terms in power purchase agreements and asset purchase agreements
  • Negotiation experience and experience presenting complex issues to senior management
  • Technical expertise preferred, including high-level understanding of plant and transmission operations; long and short-term planning strategies in a regulated utility environment.
  • Ability to research and learn industry and market knowledge necessary to support the origination group and grow in the position
