Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR) engages in the production and distribution of electricity in the United States through gas/oil, nuclear, coal, hydro, and solar power sources. The company’s Utility segment produces approximately 85% of revenue by generating, distributing, and selling electric power to customers in the US Gulf States region. The segment comprises several regulated utility companies, including Entergy Arkansas, Inc., Entergy Louisiana LLC, Entergy Mississippi, Inc., Entergy New Orleans, Inc., and Entergy Texas. Four nuclear power plant sites with capacity of some 5,200 MW are owned and operated by corporations that roll up into this segment. It also runs a small natural gas distribution business. Of its generation capacity, about 65% is from gas, oil, and hydroelectric sources, about 25% is from nuclear, and the rest comes from coal-fired plants.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President and COO of operations services and generation.This position will ideallly report  from our Woodlands office. However NOLA, Jackson, and Little Rock applicants will be equally considered.The Vice President, Safety (“VP”) will lead all corporate safety programs and professionals across the Entergy family of utilities. S/he will also be a thought leader and a key member of the senior management team, operating with a very high level of autonomy in decision-making due to the breadth and complexity of the issues under his/her purview.

 

The VP will be responsible for driving the adoption of best in class processes, policies, and procedures that ultimately ensure that a focus on safety becomes an even more integral part of the DNA of Entergy. This will require continued change management and the commitment to creating a heightened consciousness across the business to fully embed safety into Entergy’s culture. S/he will stay current on all emerging safety issues and trends, communicating effectively across the business the actions that must be taken to address emerging issues. Moreover, s/he will interact accordingly with relevant federal, state, and local regulators and staff.

 

The VP will work through a small team of direct reports, as well as through a matrixed organizational structure that requires working with business unit leadership across the enterprise. At the core of the VP’s mandate, s/he must earn the trust and respect of all constituents across the organization, from field employees to executive leaders, in order to successfully elevate Entergy’s safety culture and performance to new levels of excellence. In the daily course of his/her work, the VP will engage principally with other members of Entergy’s leadership team. Additionally, the VP will need to be a credible and visible representative of Entergy’s passion for safety with industry peers and other external stakeholders.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership and set the strategic direction for Safety function within Entergy. This includes direct development of Safety strategies and process improvement initiatives and identifying associated performance measures, establishing performance targets, and driving continuous improvement.
  • Provide governance and oversight of the Business Units across the enterprise with regards to safety results, programs, processes
  • Direct the development, communication and implementation of safety policy, guidance, and business practices for field operations.
  • Ensure that Entergy builds a self-critical working environment that identifies and addresses safety-related events in order to improve overall safety and operational performance.
  • Proactively interface with Entergy’s Leadership to promote and manage the resources required to initiate, develop, and implement work practices, procedures, tools and equipment that focus on enhanced safety. Once established, ensure ongoing applicability and sustainability of the safety management model.
  • Interface with executive leadership to align safety strategy Corporate objectives and business needs. Drive implementation of strategic safety activities throughout the enterprise.
  • Collaborate with operating groups in the creation of strategies and processes to ensure compliance with Federal, State and local safety rules. Drive consistency among organizations when appropriate.
  • Provide regular updates to the Office of the Chief Executive and Board of Directors.

 

The successful candidate must have extensive experience in managing safety issues within a field services organization, ideally within the utility industry, or an industry with relevant operating and organizational dynamics such as oil, gas, chemicals, or heavy manufacturing. A track record of demonstrated improvement in safety culture and performance that has resulted in a significant overall impact on employee well-being and an organization’s overall business performance is a must.
