This position may be filled as a Distribution Automation (DA) Specialist III or Sr depending on the candidate’s qualifications.
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
The Distribution Automation (DA) Specialist will interact & coordinate projects with DA Engineers, Distribution Planners, Distribution Asset Management, Distribution Design, Distribution Construction & Service personnel, Substation Relay Technicians, IT/OT personnel, and representatives from equipment manufacturers. DA Specialists will facilitate the technical installation, programming, testing and commissioning of distribution protection and control devices and associated automation. The position will also serve as tier 2 support to the OpCos as equipment subject matter experts to troubleshoot devices operating outside of specified limits.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide safety leadership by exemplifying strong safety culture for others to follow.
Mentor RSMs and Line Areas on data collection and equipment inspection guidelines along with mitigation practices.
Perform DA device commissioning and ensure data integrity at time of device commissioning.
Implement settings and firmware upgrades to distribution field devices.
Assist OpCo regions as equipment subject matter experts and Tier 2 equipment support.
Provide automation training and support as needed to local networks.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum education required of the position
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field, Technical degree (or equivalent work experience)
Minimum experience required of the position
DA Specialist III – 3-5 years’ experience
DA Specialist Sr – 5+ years’ experience
Desired: Relay or I&C experience.
Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position
Must exemplify strong safety and leadership practices. Prior electrical substation or distribution relaying experience. Knowledge of protective relaying, SCADA, communications, and controls. Familiar with relay test plans and commissioning. Prior experience installing, maintaining, testing, and troubleshooting electrical equipment and controls. Ability to read and understand electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams, technical manuals and instruction books. Computer competency required. Demonstrated computer skills: Windows, Excel, Access, Word. Basic knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Electric Code (NEC), and NERC protective relay standards. Knowledge of electric utility systems operation, maintenance, and construction practices. Must obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license. Demonstrated aptitude to work alone in unsupervised situations. Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse work group. Must be dependable and reliable, and work as member of a team. Must have good intrapersonal skills; must be self-motivated with ability to make decisions. Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card.
